About Us

About English Family Learning

My name is Clare Hartland. I started English Family Learning 4 years ago when people started asking about doing private courses with me. I was working for an agency at the time, and I realised that I could offer the same service privately, without the need for agents, expensive offices and staffing costs. A better deal for the students, and a better deal for me.

Teachers working together

Lucy Tilney, Charlotte Beedell and I are self-employed teachers working together in a friendly alliance. Lucy specialises in business courses for adults, Charlotte teaches general English to adults and young learners during our busiest time, the school holidays. We sometimes bring our students together for shared social activities. This works particularly well when two teenagers from the same family want to do a course at the same time.

About Clare

Clare HartlandI love my work and I love the English language. I have taught English in Portugal, Turkey, and Australia as well as here in Bristol. I am a qualified English teacher with 9 years experience. I enjoy getting to know my students really well, and tailoring the course for each unique individual. Working from home gives me the flexibility to provide dedicated tuition time whilst allowing the relaxed atmosphere of learning to continue all day.

I am interested in art, literature and music and I love exploring the countryside. I’m a native Bristolian, and I enjoy introducing my students to the life and culture that this city has to offer.  I am passionate about food; in my home, the emphasis is on fresh, local and organic produce. For me, health and taste are of equal importance. I enjoy exchanging recipes and inspiration in the kitchen with my students.

As my student, you will meet my friends. My home is a busy sociable place, and you are sure to meet people who share your interests.

My Family

I have 2 children, my son George aged 20, and my daughter Esme aged 10; my friend and lodger Ralph; and our friendly old cat Jubo. Esme is very energetic and athletic, and an enthusiastic young musician. George loves IT and computer games, and is currently doing voluntary work with children with special needs. Ralph is a photographer and film maker with a passion for classic car racing. He is a bilingual speaker of English and German.

Our Home

We live in a quiet residential street very near the heart of Bristol. You will have a large room on the ground floor, with wi-fi access and a large desk and even your own sofa. It’s a typically Victorian room, with a bay window and a large period fireplace. Lessons take place in my sunny dining room with a view of the back garden.
